Systems Engineer
Location: Greensboro, NC (hybrid)
Compensation: $85,000+-$100,000
Position Summary
The Systems Engineer is responsible for engineering, implementing, and supporting enterprise infrastructure across on-premises and cloud environments while serving as a key technical resource for maintaining reliable, secure, and scalable systems. This role provides Tier II escalation support, contributes to infrastructure improvements and system design, and partners closely with security, networking, application, and business teams to ensure technology solutions align with organizational standards, security best practices, and future growth initiatives.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on systems professional with strong technical expertise, a continuous improvement mindset, and the ability to provide an external perspective on infrastructure best practices. This individual should be comfortable working independently, assessing priorities, and helping drive infrastructure maturity while understanding the need to implement improvements thoughtfully across a diverse business environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineer, implement, and support secure, scalable infrastructure solutions across on-premises data centers and cloud platforms.
- Provide Tier II escalation support for infrastructure issues, including troubleshooting, incident response, root-cause analysis, and remediation activities.
- Support the full lifecycle of infrastructure solutions including planning, design, implementation, testing, documentation, and transition into ongoing operations.
- Administer and support Windows Server environments, Microsoft 365 services, identity platforms, and enterprise infrastructure technologies.
- Support Azure cloud environments, including compute, storage, identity, monitoring, and security services.
- Manage and maintain on-premises data center infrastructure, virtualization platforms, and core enterprise systems.
- Contribute to infrastructure modernization initiatives, including supporting the migration from a co-located data center environment to a branch-based infrastructure model with active failover and disaster recovery capabilities.
- Implement and maintain backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions, including testing recovery procedures and maintaining documentation.
- Develop automation and scripting solutions using PowerShell and related tools to improve administration, deployments, and operational efficiency.
- Support system upgrades, configuration improvements, patching, monitoring, and security hardening activities.
- Partner with security teams on vulnerability remediation, security controls, and compliance-related initiatives.
- Collaborate with networking and application teams to ensure proper system integration, performance, and reliability.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, including system configurations, standard operating procedures, troubleshooting guides, and recovery documentation.
- Provide technical recommendations and contribute an outside perspective on infrastructure best practices and improvements.
- Participate in knowledge sharing, peer collaboration, and mentoring within the technical team.
Technical Environment & Preferred Experience
- Windows Server administration and enterprise systems support
- Microsoft 365 administration and cloud services
- Azure cloud infrastructure (preferred over AWS)
- On-premises data center environments
- Virtualization technologies, including Proxmox experience preferred
- PowerShell scripting and automation
- Identity and access management solutions
- Backup, disaster recovery, and high-availability solutions
- Infrastructure monitoring and troubleshooting
- Networking fundamentals including DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, firewalls, VPNs, and certificates
- Security best practices, system hardening, and vulnerability remediation
- Infrastructure documentation and operational procedures
Required Qualifications
- 3–5+ years of experience in systems engineering, systems administration, or a similar infrastructure-focused role.
- Hands-on experience supporting production enterprise infrastructure environments.
- Strong knowledge of Windows Server, Microsoft 365, and enterprise identity platforms.
- Experience supporting cloud infrastructure, preferably Microsoft Azure.
- Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues and serving as an escalation resource.
- Ability to automate administrative tasks through scripting, preferably PowerShell.
- Understanding of infrastructure security principles, networking fundamentals, and system reliability practices.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Microsoft, Azure, VMware, virtualization, or infrastructure certifications.
- Experience with disaster recovery planning, failover solutions, and business continuity initiatives.
- Experience supporting compliance-driven environments (CMMC, HIPAA, PCI, or similar).
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code or configuration management tools such as Terraform, ARM/Bicep, DSC, or Ansible.
- Experience supporting multi-company or multi-site environments.
